Massive Stock of Codeine Syrup Reported Missing in Azamgarh; Medical Store Owner Booked
A huge cache of codeine cough syrup has gone missing from a medical store in Azamgarh’s Didarganj area, prompting an FIR against the shop owner. Authorities found the store shut and its records absent. Police have launched an investigation into suspected illegal procurement and distribution of the controlled drug.
According to officials, the disappearance of what is believed to be lakhs of bottles of controlled cough syrup was detected during an inspection by the district drug authority. With the medical store closed and no documentation available to account for the stock, the Drug Inspector filed a formal complaint. Based on this written report, police registered an FIR against the shop’s proprietor, Bipendra Singh.
Officers confirmed that the case revolves around suspected unlawful procurement and distribution of codeine syrup, a regulated pharmaceutical product frequently misused for recreational purposes. Investigators are now assessing how such a large quantity of the substance went unaccounted for and whether it may have entered illegal supply channels.
Police have begun gathering evidence, tracking supply records, and questioning individuals connected to the establishment. Authorities say the probe aims to determine the extent of the alleged diversion and identify any networks that may have benefited from the missing consignment.
The incident has underscored persistent challenges in monitoring controlled substances at the retail level and highlighted the need for tighter enforcement to prevent pharmaceutical products from slipping into unauthorised circulation.
